Selling by Serving. How Icelandair Uses Email Marketing to Keep Customers Coming Back

Icelandair, like many companies that do business in multiple countries, faces the dual challenge of maintaining consistent branding and messaging while providing local marketing managers the ability to send information to customers that is locally relevant such as Icelandair schedules and special promotions. To solve this problem, Icelandair implemented new software technology that transformed its email marketing strategy from a decentralized model to a centralized model that gave the airline central control over branding, messaging, and subscriber database management without limiting the ability of regional marketing executives to localize content as needed.

In this special presentation, Katrín Erna Gunnarsdóttir of Icelandair and Peter McCormick of ExactTarget discuss how Icelandair overhauled its email marketing strategy in 2008 and are now using email to serve customers better by delivering information that is timely and relevant. With email as the “backbone” of one-to-one marketing and customer service operations, Icelandair has dramatically improved the customer’s experience with their brand and is now benefitting from record customer loyalty.

Learn how Icelandair managed the transition to its new email marketing approach and how it tackled important issues on the political front to ensure all Icelandair regions would buy in, and on the technical front to ensure the right tools and automation were used to make the new approach manageable.

Peter McCormick, Co-Founder and General Manager, ExactTarget Global
